Prof. Paul Martin deserves the honor due to him as he was recently recognised for his services to healthcare and education in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2017, with a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award.

This marks Professor Martin’s longstanding contribution to developing Scotland’s NHS services, specifically in nursing and midwifery practices; to improving the wellbeing of the people of Scotland; and to his leadership in higher education.

Joining UWS in 2009 as Vice-Principal (International) and Executive Dean of Education, Health and Social Sciences, Professor Martin’s responsibilities focused on achieving a national and international reputation for the University’s learning and research. Paul took up the role of Depute Principal in 2013, with a key focus on strategy, performance and planning.

In 2012 Paul was appointed by the Director General of the World Health Organisation to the International Health Regulations’ (IHR) Roster of Experts. In this role he provides advice to IHR Emergency Committees and Review Committees in the event of global incidents, giving technical information and guidance on matters relating to nursing and midwifery.

Prior to joining UWS Professor Martin was Chief Nursing Officer and Director for Health Workforce for Scotland (from 2004-2009), advising the Cabinet Secretary and Ministers on the country’s health matters and leading on national policy areas, particularly including healthcare associated infection, professional regulation and patient experience. He also played the lead role in workforce planning, development and education, as well as in pay, reward and staff governance.

Professor Martin has extensive general management experience having worked as Chief Executive of Highland Primary Care NHS Trust earlier in his career, and has a broad background in nursing practice and leadership as a fully trained general nurse and health visitor. He became one of Scotland’s first male midwives following training in 1984.

Professor Craig Mahoney, UWS Principal and Vice Chancellor commented: “Paul’s well-deserved and merited award is testament to the conviction and drive that he puts into all that he does. He is an outstanding ambassador for UWS as well as widely respected for his role in the health sector across the country. He is a great example of the calibre of staff at the University and this recognition in the New Year’s Honours List is hugely appropriate.”

Professor Martin added: “I’m delighted, of course, to be included in the awards and humbled to be ranked alongside my peers in the 2017 New Year’s Honours given the quality of their work and achievements. This means a lot to me and to my family, whose support has helped me throughout my career.

“I hope that this honour also reflects on the vitally important contribution that nurses and midwives make to the high standards of patient care in Scotland and acknowledges them as major players in the health workforce.

“My role in healthcare leadership in Scotland and beyond enabled me to develop skills that I still use in my work in higher education and in influencing national health and nursing policy. At UWS I’ve been able to share the benefit of my professional experience and insight to help shape the next generation of nursing, midwifery and healthcare graduates.”
